Mobile phones numbers have grown at an exponential rate globally,
and in many places, mobile phone users have surpassed PC users.
In fact, in many countries, mobile phones have become the primary
mean of Internet access. Mobile phones have outgrown its primary
use as a communication device to become an important business
tools capitalizing on the convergence of communication, multimedia
and computing.
The ubiquity of mobile phone usage in society provides an opportunity
to exploit its capacity to enable effective business communications.
One of the main features of mobile phones, besides the obvious
ability to provide voice communication, is the ability to send
and receive small amount of text data using the Short Message
Service (SMS) feature. Almost all mobile phones since 1991 have
SMS capability. SMS was introduced mainly as a means for Telcos
to inform users of voicemails, etc. Since then, SMS has soared
in popularity, especially among the younger generation, and it
has become a major communications tool, particularly as a cost
effective substitute to mobile voice calls.
In the 10 years since the first use of SMS by mobile users, SMS
volumes have grown substantially. For example, in the 7 days of
Chinese New Year this year, Chinese mobile subscribers sent over
7 Billion messages! The younger generation that embraced the SMS
phenomenon usage as a personal tool are becoming leaders in today’s
organisations and are set to use SMS as a corporate tool. We are
beginning to see SMS emerging from its role as a pure person to
person communications tool to one that enterprises are using to
communicate more effectively to their customers and personnel.
SMS is also being used for machine to human and machine to machine
communication in many telemetric and monitoring applications.
Short Message Service, even though, as the name suggests, is
limited to 160 characters per message, has some unique features
that make it a viable and effective communication tool.
Some of these features include:
In order to make SMS an effective corporate business tool, a
number of challenges need to be met to achieve user acceptance.
Keying messages into a mobile handset is not a very appealing
process and a better means of interface needs to be achieved.
The non-repudiation and security issues of using SMS as a communication
tool also needs to be overcome. There are currently websites that
allow users to send messages from their PC. However, this introduces
the major issue of having a user’s contact list hosted on
a third party site. Creating significant privacy and security
concerns for users, especially in cases where the contact list
includes the user’s customer data.
Bond Wireless has introduced a number of SMS enabling products
for enterprises that addresses some of these issues, allowing
enterprises to use SMS easily, effectively, and inexpensively
and with a minimized security risk.
For example, in order to make SMS as user friendly as possible
to an uninitiated corporate user, SMS Print was developed. This
program, once installed, allows users to send SMS messages from
any Windows-based applications by simply using the Print function
in the application.
Campaign Messenger, one of the first Microsoft .Net certified
products, allows multiple SMS to be sent with the simple click
of a button, while entire contact database resides securely on
the user’s PC. This application allows messages to be personalized
and successful campaigns or regular messages to be stored as templates.
The SAV (SMS Authenticate and Verify) Messaging product ensures
that only the intended recipient of a message can read the message
and provides confirmation of receipt to a sender, without the
need to modify the user’s SIM card or any intervention from
the user’s Telco carrier. This technology has the potential
to enable M-commerce and micro payments.
